Our trip to Prague... Beautiful

We made our first real trip away from home last week. Our first stop, other than Jack's potty at the Esso Station about 45 minutes in, was Dresden. Originally not expecting much from this stop, we were surprised with how beautiful the Old City was.

Dresden, the capital of Saxony, surprises visitors with fine Baroque architecture and impressive museums. Halfway between Prague and Berlin, Dresden makes for a fun, intriguing stop rich with history. Sadly, Dresden is best known today for its destruction in World War II. American and British pilots firebombed the city, killing more than 50,000 people and destroying 85 percent of the historical center. American Kurt Vonnegut, who was a POW in Dresden during the firebombing, later memorialized the event in his novel Slaughterhouse-Five.

When Germany was divvied up at the end of World War II, Dresden wound up in the Soviet sector. Forty years of communist rule left the city in an economic hole — even today, Saxony's unemployment rate hovers around 19 percent. Some older Dresdeners feel nostalgia for the Red old days, when "everyone had a job." But in the decade and a half since the Berlin Wall fell, Dresden has made real progress in getting back on its feet — and most locals are enjoying capitalism with gusto. Today's Dresden is a young and vibrant city, crawling with happy-go-lucky students who barely remember communism.

Kristy also took a day tour of Berlin as part of her conference. She saw Check Point Charlie, stood over Hitler's Bunker, saw the remaining portion of the wall, and the Brandenburg Gate.

Next was the couple hour drive across the border into the Czech Republic and on to Prague. Prague could be the most beautiful city that Kristy and I have seen on our travels. Every building seemed like it could house a museum. We packed in many sites in 2 days.

We stayed in a small hotel across from the Bethlehem Chapel. The building has been reconstructed over the years but stills has its original 13th century cellar where they serve breakfast. The sprawling Prague Castle is home to 2 magnificent churches, the palace, and many "smaller" structures. We also visited the Charles Bridge, the Old Jewish Quarter, and Old Town with a beautiful Astronomical Clock. Prague is known for its garnet jewels and marionettes (small wooden puppets) so we happily contributed to the Czech economy and took home some authentic souvenirs.

Enjoy the pictures...sorry there are so many.

Oct. 11 Update...

No home internet yet, but it looks promising for the NEAR future. We'll send out an email as soon as we are online :)

We had our first visitors last weekend. Jess and Matt accompanied us to Trier and Heidelberg, Germany. They are traveling a bit on their own and will rejoin us this weekend.

Pics have been added to the gallery.

After a month in Germany...

We have settled into the new house. We know we made a great choice, given that we'll live here longer than any other place since our high school days. Our stuff just arrived on Wednesday. We have a few hundred boxes still sitting around the house, many waiting to be unpacked and then hear... "Why didn't we sell THIS at our garage sale??"

The picture gallery has some new additions. The last photo is a pre-makeover view of your guest quarters. Enjoy.

After a week in Germany...

After near break downs from all the hassle of getting settled, things came together on Thursday and Friday. We got cell phones -- handys --, our car -- the much anticipated "Birdie Car"--, and agreed to rent a nice house this morning. We'll pass on all the information in emails, just in case we have spies following our blog.

Jack is already learning German, please and thank you, although this morning he told our German hotel owner "Adios" after breakfast. Eli is ready to try some German delicacies, but pears and applesauce will have to do at this point.

FYI:
We already have three reservations at Hotel Radio, so everyone else book early!! Hope to see you all soon.

Germany Adventure, Parts 2 and 3...

It's been a while since we posted to this blog, mainly since I don't think we've sat still since August 7.

That day began our trek from Dallas to Allentown. We bid farewell to our car, and hope that it arrives safely in Germany before we leave in 3 years. In Philly, we were greeted by Uncle Mark and Aunt Nicole, driving two cars to handle all our loot. We spent two weeks with the family, celebrating Mark and Nicole's wedding on this stop. Jack and Eli served proudly as Ring Bearer and Ring Baby, respectively, and Mom and Dad were happy that Jack made it down the aisle "all the way to Jesus."

Two weeks later, we made the trip to Dulles Airport with the family, more bags, and of course Oscar for the flight to Frankfurt, Germany. The flight went well... Oscar slept the whole way, but Jack and Eli chose to keep us busy by sleeping on alternate schedules.

We are currently in a nice, old, family-run hotel in Rodenbach, Germany, just outside of Kaiserslautern. Kristy has met her new co-workers, our new car is ready for pickup, and we have been house-hunting for what seems like an eternity, but is really only about 3 days. Thanks to the aptly named "Nora the Navigator" cousin of Jack's friend Dora (i.e. our in car GPS system), we have been able to find our way thru the narrow, winding German streets to look at our potential homes. We have found several good candidates thus far, but are holding out for that perfect place -- WITH THE NICE GUEST ROOM!!

Check out the update in the Radio Family Picture Gallery for some of our newest photo additions.

Our Adventure from El Paso to Germany... Pt 1

We began our journey on Aug. 2 with the sale of our house. The car drive to Dallas commenced on Friday, Aug. 3. We are currently spending a few days in the Dallas area before dropping our car off for shipment to Germany and boarding our plane for PA. Today was spent with old friends from San Antonio. Jack has a friend a few months his younger, and Oscar also caught up with an old flame! We have already sampled some food that we have been missing for a few years - Jason's Deli, Cheesecake Factory, and Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen.
